About Us

The National Radial Engine Exhibition was started in 2003 by the Colorado Plains Regional Airport Development Committee. The airport and adjoining facilities are owned and operated by the Town of Akron, Colorado. The original concept for the exhibition was a static display featuring radial engine aircraft from the 1920’s to the 1950’s. The event has grown dramatically each year, and now includes world-class aerobatics acts, a thrilling World War II reenactment complete with pyrotechnics, a car show, a motorcycle show, radio controlled airplanes, a 5K walk/run, and many vendor booths.

This unique show allows the audiences to wander through a replica World War II Army camp and visit with the costumed re-enactors. Attendees may go right up to the aircraft on static display and visit with the pilots, rub shoulders with the pilots and performers, and get a personal feel for the aircraft that provide the aerobatics shows.

Kids love the flight simulator and the Kids Space booth that allows them to create aviation crafts to take home as a memento of the day.

The show is currently planned and carried out by the NREE Committee, which is made up of about two dozen year-round volunteers. They are joined show week by hundreds of additional volunteers, some who travel over 200 miles, to help put together the best air show in the region. The show is an effort underwritten by the Town of Akron and cornerstone sponsors, Bank of Colorado, Y-W Electric Association, Pioneer Distributing, and Bonanza Ford. The committee is always ready to welcome new volunteers as the show continues to grow and requires more dedication to achieve the expected quality.
